Why I Left Adi Da's Community

Posted by Connie Shaw on Feb-7-00

The process of leaving the cult began when I formed a friendship with a woman devotee who talked about god in her own words. I started realizing that I only talked about god in the same words that Adi Da did. I slowly saw that I no longer knew what I really felt about anything.  I was programmed, brainwashed.  At first I thought that there was something wrong with myself, then with the community of devotees. Then eventually I saw that the community was exactly how the guy at the top needed it to be. So I left.

I'm not sure that this process paralleled any other that I've had. It was a pretty strong and unusual experience and I learned a great lesson from it. I learned that all I have to go on is my own intuition, and I should never look to anyone or anything else in its place.
