Adi Da and his Disney art collection paid for by devotees

The rationale behind the art collection varies from the absurd to the bizarre. On the absurd end, this was actually argued to be some kind of sound investment of community money, building up some kind of "Vatican treasures" that would one day be worth a fortune. Of course, because they are "sacred treasures", they weren't ever to be sold. But this was more an after-the-fact rationalization than a reason given.

At the time, it was argued that somehow there's some magical significance to Disney art, some tie-in on the higher planes to Da's Avataric Incarnation, and that owning this art was Extremely Important to Da's work with the entire world, neh, the entire cosmic mandala, and that of course it therefore required great sacrifice on our parts. Anything Da wants, is suddenly part of his "work", and therefore, since he has a fascination with Disney art, and since he's God, this means that God is fascinated with Disney art, and therefore, it's extremely important to God's Work that Adidam attain the largest and finest collection of Disney art in the world.

And when the paperweights came along, it got even more bizarre. Remember, this all occurred after Da's popper-nitrous oxide-induced glaucoma crisis, which wiped out about 80% of his peripheral vision. He found that playing with paperweights helped his eyes feel better, so of course we had to spend millions on the best paperweights in the world. And this too became a huge part of his "Divine Work" with the world. The community went deeply into debt purchasing these baubles, and had endless fundraisers to pay for them, in which devotees were encouraged to drink heavily until they got the courage to donate even more money to Adidam. Without this, I'm sure the planet wouldn't still be here.

The idea of course is that spending all this money on art would bring about a great financial windfall for everyone involved, because we were feeding the cosmic machine of God. But of course none of that worked out. The community just ended up broke, in debt, and unable to function. People ended up broke, in debt, and unable to function. Da's eyes were not cured by his paperweights. The rich and famous did not come to Adidam in droves because of our art collection. The market for Disney art did not explode. The collection gathers dust in various vaults at the MOA. Ordinary shit can't be paid for in Adidam, and the reputation of Adidam has sunk even lower than before all this, if that is even imaginable.
